Rila Lodge Bulgaria

This village is without a doubt the jewel of the Rila Mountain Range. The closest residential area to Borovets (7kms away), it is incredibly popular with holiday home owners. The scenery is stunning and the village is located in a beautiful mountain valley with the picturesque Beli Iskar river flowing through the centre of the village. For anyone who appreciates mountain scenery, Beli Iskar has it in abundance.

It is one of the key locations that the Super Borovets project will affect. As a result, developers are now targeting the village and new developments are being released on the market. The good news is that the council are responsibly working with developers to ensure that impact on the village is minimal and that there will be no overdevelopment. The new developments will greatly add to the existing facilities available in the village which is of course a benefit to all visitors to this charming village.

The village is rich in ancient traditions which do make it a more unique destination. Tourists should be warned that this is not a sprawling concrete jungle of apartment blocks and cheap bars. Beli Iskar has a unique identity which makes it automatically appealing for all visitors, with its small winding streets and small quaint restaurants. No visit to the Borovets region is complete without seeing Beli Iskar!

One of the most noticeable land marks as you enter the village is the unusual rock formation known as Eagle's Rock. It towers over the village providing beautiful views for any property overlooking it. It creates a type of 'V' shape at the end of the village which has the benefit of funnelling sunlight through into the village and of course, beautiful sunsets.

Activities

Being a popular destination for tourists, the local council set up a 'Tourist Centre' in 2003. It can be found in the centre of the village next to the council building. Since its inauguration, the tourist centre has co-ordinated a number of successful projects which significantly raised the village's profile in Bulgaria. These projects include:

- Festival of Rila

This is usually held at the end of June and the one of the most popular events is 'Zelnik' making! Zelnik is the traditional dish of the village and contestants have to make the best Zelnik dish to win. To win this award will certainly earn you great respect from the locals!

- Rock Festival

Held annually at the end of August, this rock festival lasts for three days and sees the arrival of many bands from across Bulgaria. It is a great way to see live Bulgarian rock music and meet many new and interesting people.

Super Borovets Project

It is very hard to talk about Beli Iskar and not to mention the Super Borovets project and the huge interest in the village. Irrespective of the current development going on, the Super Borovets aims to regenerate the village and make it more appealing to skiers. A whole range of exciting new facilities will be added, money will be invested in the infrastructure and small areas will be added to the existing regulation zones. Below is outlined briefly what this ambitious provide for this well situated village:

  • Numerous ski runs to be built connecting the village to the present resort of Borovets.
  • All roads in the village will be improved. The main Beli Iskar-Borovets road is to be expanded and improved also. New roads will be built.
  • Two 4 chair ski lifts will be constructed to connect the village to the current resort of Borovets.
  • An area just outside the village has been designated for the building of chalets. It is planned to have a capacity of 7000 beds. We have plots in this area as well.
  • Activities such as 'mountain safari' will be started.
  • Sports centres will be built. These include snow stadiums with facilities for children, indoor ski runs and sledging.
  • Entertainment facilities will be built, which will include things like cinemas etc.
  • The Beli Iskar river will be improved to make it more suitable for swimming and fishing. As mentioned above, a 2697 decare eco trail will be built along river, along with a forest.
  • A big emphasis will be given to ecological tourism. Family hotels will be built here, integration with locals will be encouraged as well as the teaching of local traditions. In order to do this, activities and courses will be set up to for tourists to learn traditional Bulgarian arts and crafts, the areas folklore, icon making, woodcraft and traditional cooking. An art centre will be built to accommodate for this.
